What you can expect to discover about your Ancestors from the Census:

The first National census was taken in 1801, and a census has been taken every ten years since that date, apart from 1941. The first census of use to the genealogist however is that of 1841, with the prior ones being mainly headcounts of the population. Census information is released by the Public Record Office after one hundred years.

1841:
  • The address of the household
  • Forenames and Surnames of household members
  • Age (exact for those under 15, rounded down to the nearest 5 years for those over 15)
  • Gender
  • Occupation
  • Whether born within or outside Census County.

    1851,1861,1871,1881,1891,1901:
  • The address of the household
  • Forenames and Surnames of household members
  • Relationship to the Head of the Household
  • Age
  • Gender
  • Occupation, whether employed or of own account
  • Place of birth
  • Marital Status
  • Nature of any disability
