?Don?t let others take control of your life?

Glasgow Residents aged 65 and over are being encouraged to speak up for their rights as the Advocacy Service launches its Older People?s Service.  With the introduction of free personal care for the elderly, The new Care Commission Standards, and the re-structuring and closure of many care homes throughout Glasgow, this new service promises clarity in a time of great confusion for some who are made to feel like the most vulnerable members of our communities.

EARS

The Edinburgh Advocacy Representation Service - now trading as EARS Advocacy Service for Older People - is funded by health and social work to provide free, independent advocacy (on a one to one basis) to older people in, or moving into long term care.

We provide advocacy to older people in residential care homes or in hospital delayed discharge situations throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians. Although the service is funded through the statutory sector, we are completely independent. The Scottish Executive is very keen to see advocacy made available and every local authority health board in Scotland has been requested to develop, fund and implement an advocacy action plan and  local advocacy services.

Ceartas  (Pronounced Kier-tis) is a Gaelic word for equity, fairness, and right. This is what we wish to achieve and promote as we support and represent people with dementia in East Dunbartonshire.

Ceartas provide information and advocacy for older people and people with dementia. Advocacy is the process of putting forward the views and opinions of the individual, and working to ensure that their voice is heard and acknowledged.

Our advocacy service can provide:
  • Support to arrange financial affairs
  • Support with legal issues
  • Support at meetings
  • Support to arrange care
  • Support with your rights
  •  Support to contact other agencies or talk to them on your behalf, such as Social Work, benefits agency, health etc.

EAST LANCASHIRE ADVOCACY

An independent agency, that offers support to people to put their views and feelings forward to service providers and others. The help they offer includes assisting people to put forward their views at meetings, making telephone calls on their behalf, asking questions, discussing the range of options available and helping to translate official jargon.

They offer one-to-one support or support for groups. The service is free and confidential and is run by volunteers who are trained as advocates.

They provide:

  • Short-term Advocacy for people who are in contact with Health and Social Services departments.

  • Mental Health Advocacy offering one-to-one support for people with mental health problems.

  • Citizens Advocacy providing long-term support for people with learning disabilities

  • User Involvement and Self-Advocacy support for users of services. These groups can become a ?collective voice? and a vehicle to help people becomes directly involved in the planning and delivery of services.
